By Brian Miluk, GEHS Wrestling Coach

Our Moto this season was “Setting Higher Standards!” Well, we certainly did that this season. We won the “Coal Country Challenge” by beating Beckley. (We never did that before.) We won the B.N.I. Championships. (We never did that before.) We scored more points at the State Championships than we did last year. (4th highest in school history.) We had 7 different Wrestlers win matches at the State Tournament. (We never did that before.) We had 14 Wrestlers recognized as All-State Academic Team members. (We never did that before.) We have definitely set our standards higher and I could go on and on about our accomplishments this year. However, we are nowhere near satisfied!

Our new standards have become Personal! We had a freshman win over 20 matches this year at 160 lbs. and place at the Regionals and he’s not satisfied. We had 3 Seniors lose their match to place at the State Tournament. They’re not satisfied. IT HURTS! It hurts a lot! Life is funny when you raise your standards. Some things that used to be OK are no longer acceptable. 2X State Place-Winner, 4X All-State Academic Team member, Regional Champion, Conference Champion, All-Time Career Most Wins leader, All-Time Career Most Pins leader, Josiah Solak, will currently be known as one of the top 5 Wrestlers in the history of Greenbrier East High School. However, he is not satisfied. As a person and a Wrestler, he has “Set Higher Standards” and will become a better man because of that motto. Our Motto is a way of life for our Wrestling program. On and off the mat, we will continue to make Greenbrier County PROUD. I KNOW that I am VERY PROUD of the effort, dedication and commitment of ALL our Wrestlers. It was a fun and GREAT season. Thank you everyone for your loyalty and support.

TRIVIA: Greenbrier East has had 4 Wrestlers place multiple times at the State Championships. Can you name them?

Upcoming events and highlights:

The Post Season Wrestling Tournament Trail begins now! Our Wrestling Banquet will be on Tuesday, March 17. More info to follow. Next week I will give final statistics on our Wrestlers.

EGMS UPDATE: Good Luck to the EGMS Wrestlers going to the Jr. State Championships this weekend. Their Athletic Banquet is on Monday, March 16.

MILUK HUMOR: “There are two rules for success… 1) Never reveal everything you know.”
