By Brian Miluk, GEHS Wrestling Coach

Need somewhere to go to get out of the COLD? Well, the Wrestling Regional Championships are here!! I am sure that it will be very heated there. This year they will be hosted by Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. Coach “Street” will be the Tournament Director, therefore guaranteeing a well-run and first class event. Come out and watch and support some of the best Wrestling in Southern West Virginia while cheering on the Spartans. The top 4 Wrestlers at each Weight Class will qualify for the State Championships the following weekend.

One last note of thanks goes to all our Sponsors of our successful Coalfield Conference Invitational Wrestling Tournament. Performance Auto, Gillespie’s, POSTNET, Future Automotive, Greenbrier Motors, The Memory of Ethan Alderman, Cherry Lane Auto, Tim Holbrook, Foxfire Real Estate, Dr. Thomas Karrs, Brier Properties, Solak Builders Inc., Grand Home Furnishings, PROSERCH of Greenbrier Valley, CSXIP, Chris Hall of State Farm and Ron Magruder were all very influential in the Success. THANK YOU!

The last time the Greenbrier East Wrestling team had to overcome some adversity with Weather problems and Water issues, we went on to win the Coal Country Challenge and the BNI Championships. Let’s hope for similar results at the Regionals.

Going into the Regionals our Top Wrestlers with the Most Victories this season are Evan Roberts (41), Jasiel Kinder (38), Josiah Solak (36), Logan Evans (34), Levi Hobbs (27), Sheldon Simmons (23), Aaron Davis (21), Adam Zimmerman (20), Jacob Thomas (19), Jacob Hefner (17) and Ethan Asbury (16).

Adam Zimmerman leads the Team with 51 Takedowns; Evan Roberts leads the Team with 33 Pins and Jasiel Kinder leads the Team with 3 Technical Falls (Beating an opponent by 15 points).

TRIVIA: There is a person who helps out with the Greenbrier East Basketball programs and was one of the top Wrestlers in the State while he competed for Woodrow Wilson High School. Can you name this friend of Coach Justice?

Upcoming events and highlights:

We will be competing in Huntington on Feb. 26-28 for the State Wresting Championships at the Big Sandy Arena.

Follow us on Twitter @CoachMiluk and our Facebook page Greenbrier East Spartan Wrestling.

EGMS UPDATE: The West Virginia Jr. State Championships are March 7, 8 in Parkersburg. We have quite a few EGMS Wrestlers training for the ‘Big Event’.

MILUK HUMOR: “I saw on TV that a short Fortune Teller escaped from prison. Does that make her a Small Medium at Large?” Ha!

TRIVIA ANSWER: The successful All-State Wrestling Place-Winner is Donald “The Bull” Parker. I heard that he was one of their best ever Athletes and an even better person. He is ALWAYS nice to me.
