Let me say this first: wrestling is a great sport! The highs and lows make you feel alive. I put my world on hold last week after “Part II” of the West Virginia State Wrestling Championships.

I had the opportunity and pleasure to go to the NCAA Wrestling National Championships in St. Louis. It was, by far, a wrestling highlight that I will always cherish. I was lucky enough to go with my friend, Greg, who knows more about wrestling than anyone I know in Greenbrier County. It was FUN!! Now, back to reality. Congratulations to Leslie Campbell and Logan Evans who both placed sixth at the state championships. Cayden Hoover, Levi Hobbs, Jacob Hefner and Jacob Thomas all finished in the Top 8. Andre Escobedo and Aaron Davis were also one match away from placing. Zach Mullins, Ethan Asbury and Zach Enox won big matches for us at the State tournament and along with Waymon Browning and Cameron Zobrist, we scored more points than ever before in the history of Greenbrier East Wrestling. What a GREAT season! We continue to improve each year as we set the bar even higher. I love this team and the people involved. I am a VERY lucky person.

TRIVIA: Only two teams in the whole state of West Virginia in the past five years have increased their scoring each year at the State Wrestling Championships. Can you name both of them?

Upcoming events and highlights: It’s Freestyle season and a lot of our wrestlers are now on the tournament trail and competing in national events. They are also training for the West Virginia Olympic-style Wrestling Championships in Huntington on May 6.

SAVE THE DATE: Our Wrestling Banquet has been moved back to Tuesday, Apr. 4, at 6 p.m. in the West Virginia University Building at the State Fairgrounds. We will be recognizing and honoring all of our wrestlers for their great season. Please come and join us. It WILL be Fun!

E.G.M.S. UPDATE: Open Mats on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays after school for anyone looking to improve as they continue to train and compete. Congrats to Landen Hoover who placed at the Junior State Championships this past weekend. That is Big-Time!

Eastern Greenbrier Wrestling Club: Congratulations to Micah Fisher (7th), Cy Gumm (7th), Bella Arbogast (6th), James Godby (6th) and Will Godby (4th) for placing at the State Championships. The future looks bright. Hard work = Success!

MILUK HUMOR: My daughter, the dietetics and nutrition major, has me on a new diet. Bananas and coconuts. I have not lost any weight, but boy can I climb a tree. Ha-ha!

TRIVIA ANSWER: The two teams to increase their scoring at the State Championships for each of the past five years are University High School and Greenbrier East High School. That puts us in pretty good company. University High School is coached by this year’s Coach of the Year Ken Maisel. Coach Maisel is a great coach and an even better person.
