The West Virginia State Wrestling Rankings are out! Currently as a Team we are ranked in the Top 10. Individually we have five wrestlers ranked in the Top 10.

Landen Hoover (fourth), Zach Mullins (sixth), Cayden Hoover (ninth), Owen Quinn (tenth) and Nick Thomas (ninth) are currently ranked. As we tell our wrestlers, rankings are for the fans to get excited and cause discussions. As a wrestler, you need to use them for motivation. It’s exciting to be recognized for our efforts, but we must keep our eye on the prize! This is the time of the season that we pick up the pace and refocus on our goals. I really wish that people would stop by the wrestling room and watch these students work hard. I know that you would be impressed. This team WILL be ready! I believe in this team!

Trivia: Greenbrier East Wrestling has had 18 Conference Champions. Twice we have had a Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament. Can you name the two wrestlers who have won that award?

Upcoming events and highlights: This Friday and Saturday we will be competing at the Big Blue Tournament in Christiansburg, VA. It is one of the toughest tournaments in the area. There will be a few NATIONALLY ranked teams and wrestlers there. It will be fun! We will be going to Beckley on Wednesday, Jan. 23, for the Coal Country Challenge match at 7 p.m. It was snowed out last time. As team, we have won the Greenbrier Duals Tournament and the Region 3 Duals Championships and have a 21-8 dual meet record. Always improving!

EGMS update: The Middle School team will be going to the WSAZ Tournament in Huntington. It is the toughest tournament in all of West Virginia. Good luck!

Eastern Greenbrier Wrestling Club: It’s getting close to the qualifying tournaments for the Youth State Championships. Keep working hard.

Miluk humor: I’m in trouble again… My wife asked me the other day, “What’s on TV?” I said “Dust!” OUCH!! I’m getting used to the couch. Ha!

Trivia answer: The two Greenbrier East wrestlers who won the Most Outstanding Wrestler award were Rick Moore (160 lbs.) in 1990 and Andre Escobedo (132 lbs.) in 2017. This would be a great year to add our third award winner.

Greenbrier East High School Wrestler of the Week

Name: Robert Blevins

Grade: 9th Grade

GPA: 3.50

Parents: Kevin and Johanna Blevins

Record: 26-7 (13 Pins)

Highlight: Greenbrier Duals Champion

Quote: “Go as far as you can… then go a little farther!”

Coach’s Comment:”Blevins is one of the hardest workers on the team. He loves to compete and hates to lose. I love that combination. He is a winner!”
