It was senior night on Tuesday and at halftime of the boys basketball game, we recognized and honored Bruce Humphreys and Cayden Hoover. What a great event.

The coaches, wrestlers, school and community will miss these guys when they go off to college. I am so proud of the young men that they have become! Our wrestling team has broken many records because of their effort and leadership. They will succeed! I also want to thank Darla Fisher, Sheryl Hulmes, Bimbo Coles and others who made this event happen. Thank you!

This continues the streak of every senior wrestler getting accepted to college. That speaks volumes for the program. Side note: more than 90 percent of the 106 players taking part in Super Bowl LIII between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams were multi-sport athletes in high school, according to tracking football. I cannot emphasize that enough! The good ones know how to compete!

Trivia: Cayden Hoover became only the seventh Greenbrier East wrestler to win both a conference championship and a regional championship. Can you name the other wrestlers who achieved that accomplishment?

Upcoming events and highlights: Congratulations! We took 11 wrestlers to the coalfield conference and every wrestler placed. Nick Thomas (6th), Bruce Humphreys (5th), Taylor Baldwin (3rd), Steven Martinez (3rd), Waymon Browning (3rd), Robert Blevins (3rd), Alex Zimmerman (3rd), Owen Quinn (3rd), Zach Mullins (2nd), Landen Hoover (Champion) And Cayden Hoover (champion). The team won the AAA Coalfield Conference title and took 3rd overall. Great job! This Saturday, Feb. 9, we go to Beckley for the Region 3 Championships. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. The top four wrestlers at each weight class will go on to the state championships in Huntington on February 21. Good luck to everyone!

E.G.M.S. update:  it was exciting to see 11 wrestlers training this week for the Jr. State Championship on Feb. 17. Good luck!

Eastern Greenbrier Wrestling Club: The youth team continues to succeed. They took seven wrestlers to the conference championships and had five champions and a runner-up. Great job!

Miluk humor: My wife says that I am such a procrastinator that I am afraid of Saturday the 14th. Ha!

Trivia answer: The Greenbrier East wrestlers that were both conference champions and regional champions along with Cayden Hoover were Andre Escobedo ’17, Levi Hobbs ’18, Jasiel Kinder ’13, Josiah Solak ’13, Matt Vance ’03, and Joe Heath ’00.
