Greenbrier County wrestling champions!

If that has a familiar sound to it, it’s because Greenbrier East has won the county championship match the last four years in a row. Wow! Every year it is a hard-fought battle that gets very loud, crazy, wild and exciting. This year they are the #1 State ranked “A” team in West Virginia. They are a very good team and we will be cheering them on in Huntington to win another state title. We have built a good relationship with their coaches and wrestlers through respect. Competition and local rivalries are good for sports. Again, it was a fun event with many wrestlers given an opportunity to shine!

Trivia: What head wrestling coach at Greenbrier East High School coached the longest in Greenbrier East history?

Upcoming events and highlights: CONGRATULATIONS again for winning the county championships. The wrestlers also competed in the 16 team Shady Spring Tournament and placed second. Our place-winners were: Waymon Browning (fourth), Owen Quinn (third), Nick Thomas (second), Landen Hoover (champion), Cayden Hoover (champion), and Zach Mullins (champion).

Zach Mullins was also named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Wow! That is big-time! The wrestling team will travel to Liberty Raleigh for the Coalfield Conference Invitational Tournament on Feb. 1 and 2. Wrestling starts at 5 p.m. on Friday. If you ever need information about West Virginia wrestling, there is a great webpage called wvmat.com. Enjoy!

EGMS update: Every wrestler won matches at the Clay County Tournament. Showing improvement throughout the season. There was also a “Solak vs. Solak” coaching debut at the tournament. Eastern Greenbrier Wrestling Club: The West Virginia Youth State Wrestling Championship will be in Huntington on Feb. 16 and 17. Good Luck!

Miluk humor: My wife says that I talk too much. That I need to go to a 12-step program for compulsive talkers. It’s called On Anon Anon. Ha!

Trivia answer: The Greenbrier East Wrestling Coach who coached the longest is Marion Gordon. Coach Gordon coached wrestling for over 20 years. WOW! Heck, he is still coaching today with the Greenbrier East Girls Basketball team. Now, that’s LOYALTY!
