Miluk’s ‘Mat’ ters

The Greenbrier East Wrestlers have been very busy!

In a matter of five days, we won the County Championships, beating Greenbrier West 33-24; we won the Coal Country Challenge beating Beckley 57-21, and were crowned Champions of the Appalachian Fasteners Invitational Tournament at Shady Spring (14 teams). We are definitely going in the right direction as we prepare for the Conference and Regional Tournaments. Our top place-winners at the A.F.I. Tournament were Cayden Hoover (1st), Zach Mullins (1st), Levi Hobbs (1st), Jacob Hefner (1st), Leslie Campbell (2nd), Aaron Davis (2nd), Colby Piner (3rd), Bruce Humphreys (4th) and Levi Fisher (4th). It was a fun tournament! It was also an opportunity for some of our starters to rest and get healthy!

Trivia: Last season we had one wrestler who won both the Conference Championship and the Regional Championship. Can you name the wrestler?

Upcoming events and highlights: Friday and Saturday. Feb. 2 and 3, we will be travelling to PikeView High School for the Coalfield Conference Championships. Wrestling starts at 5 p.m. on Friday and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. We won the AAA Team Championship last year and finished second place overall. It should be a great springboard going into the Regionals on February 10 at Beckley.

E.G.M.S. Update: The E.G.M.S. Wrestlers are continuing to work hard as they finish off their regular season and prepare for Post-Season Competitions. “Off season training makes in season champions!”

Eastern Greenbrier Wrestling Club: This Wrestling Club continues to improve while enjoying the many levels of success. As I often tell our high school wrestlers, “Success is not a destination but a journey.” Enjoy the journey! Success at the youth level may be measured in many ways. Some wrestlers enjoy learning new moves, exercising, making friends, winning tournaments, being part of a successful team, etc. Success is not a “one size fits all.” That’s why wrestling is such a great sport. GET INVOLVED!

Miluk Humor: When my wife said that she was going to purchase a lottery ticket for the upcoming $200 million drawing, I sarcastically responded, “Yeah, let me know when you win!” With a side glance, she replied, “Oh don’t worry, I’ll leave you a note!” (OH OH)

Trivia Answer: The wrestler who won both championships last season was Andre Escobedo. Andre was also named the M.V.P. of the Conference Tournament and is now going to West Virginia Tech and on the Wrestling Team.

Coach’s Comment: “Waymon was undefeated this past week. When he beat the wrestler for the County Championships and the team chanted M.V.P.-M.V.P.-M.V.P., his smile was priceless! His work ethic has helped him come a long way! His sense of humor keeps up on our toes and a pleasure to be around.”
