Greenbrier East Wrestling

Wrestling Newsletter

Congratulations to the Greenbrier East Wrestlers. The team traveled to Point Pleasant High School and competed against 20 other teams. Several of the teams are currently ranked in the top ten of West Virginia. The Wrestlers finished in 6th. place overall with Keegan Mickey named our Wrestler of the Week. It was a Dual meet tournament and we started off great. We won our first 5 matches by beating Nitro, Hurricane, Buffalo, Robert C. Byrd and Clay County. However, things got tough as the team lost to Point Pleasant, St. Albans and Beckley to finish the day. Josiah Solak stayed hot by winning 7 matches. Jasiel Kinder, Logan Evans and Keegan Mickey won 6 matches. While Dylan Bullock (5), Evan Roberts (5), Adam Zimmerman (4), Michael Villars (3), Katie Ervin (2), Joe Sampson (2), Paul Flowers (1), Sheldon Simmons (1), and Draegan McQuade all contributed to the success. It was a great opportunity for all our wrestlers to get some tough competition.

TRIVIA: What parent of a current Greenbrier East Wrestler wrestled at the West Virginia State Wrestling Championships and won some matches? Actually he was one match away from being on the podium (top 6).

Upcoming events and highlights

This Saturday (Dec. 21) we will be hosting the 2nd. Annual “GREENBRIER DUALS” TOURNAMENT. The wrestling will begin at 11 a.m. at Greenbrier East High School in the main gym. Greenbrier East will wrestle Wyoming East at 11 a.m. We will then wrestle Covington, VA at 12:30, Harrisonburg, VA at 2 p.m., Oak Hill at 3:30 p.m., and Roanoke Catholic at 5 p.m.. It will be a full day of wrestling. Please stop by to support and cheer our wrestlers on to victory. A big thank you also goes out to my friend and wrestling expert, Greg Zafros, who is working on a Video project to help promote and pay tribute to our wrestlers.

EGMS UPDATE: The EGMS wrestlers had their annual “Assembly” wrestling match in front of the whole school. It is so exciting to watch the classmates and faculty rally around the team and support their efforts. Thank you to everyone!

MILUK HUMOR: I just broke a light bulb today. Does that mean that I will have 7 years of bad ideas? (Ha)

TRIVIA ANSWER: Mike Zimmerman was a 2 time state qualifier and held the school record at one time for the most team points scored at the State Wrestling Championships. His son Adam is following in his footsteps and went undefeated last week going 4-0. Adam is a Junior this season and is 7-1 overall.
