On Jan. 20, 2025, at 11 a.m., people from the Greenbrier Valley and surrounding areas will gather in front of the Greenbrier County Courthouse in Lewisburg to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This annual tradition, now over 30 years in the making, will continue with a celebration that has evolved over the years and has become a key event for the community.

The day will begin with a gathering on Court Street, where attendees will hear an invocation and a proclamation marking Martin Luther King, Jr. Week from Lewisburg Mayor Beve rly White. The group will then proceed with a march while singing a civil rights song.

Last year, the march took place in the midst of a snowstorm, but despite the cold, the event was marked by a sense of solidarity as participants made their way to the Lewisburg United Methodist Church. Following the march, a free community lunch is held at LUMC before the program at the church begins. Wraps, chili, and cupcakes will be on the menu again this year.

Last year’s program featured a performance by the Resurrecting Praise Community Choir, a group of singers from Greenbrier and Allegheny Counties. The choir will return in 2025 to bring their music to the occasion once again.

This celebration is more than just an annual event; it’s a chance for the people of Lewisburg to reflect on the values of justice, equality, and community that Dr. King fought for. As they march, sing, and share a meal together, participants renew their commitment to the ideals of racial harmony and justice for all.

The public is invited to join in the observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a day to remember the sacrifices of a great leader and continue the work of his mission.

The 2024 march to LUMC was a snowy one last year.
In 2023, the Resurrecting Praise Community Choir performed, and they will return for another performance this year.
