In December, the General Andrew Lewis Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) recognized Katy Montgomery as a Literacy Champion. The NSDAR recognizes individuals who have avidly supported reading, learning and literacy programs for children and families. Ms. Montgomery, a retired elementary school teacher and educator of more than 35 years, has been an active volunteer in retirement. She is on the Board of the WV Read Aloud Program in Greenbrier County. She has mentored pre-service teachers from Concord University in schools across southern West Virginia.

Montgomery has established and participated in summer reading camps in Greenbrier, Monroe, and Pocahontas counties. She promotes childhood literacy as a tutor at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church program, Start the Adventure in Reading (STAIR) for second grade students. Additionally, she shares her love of reading with local book groups including the Shepherd’s Center of Greenbrier Valley. Ms. Montgomery is an outstanding ambassador for literacy.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a non-profit, non-political women’s service organization whose main objectives are historic preservation, education and patriotism. Members are all lineal descendants of those who supported the cause of independence in the Revolutionary War back in 1776.

If you are interested in the Daughters of the American Revolution, call Registrar Sandra Cowan at 681-215-5303 in the afternoon.
