Asbury-Linda Carol Bartgis Walkup, 69, passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following a long battle with cancer.

obit.Linda Carol Bartgis WalkupBorn Sept. 17, 1944, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Howard Jerome “Mack” and Pearl Rean Rudisill Bartgis.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Benson Bartgis and Gerald Lee Bartgis; two sisters, Margaret Ellen Bartgis and Martha Ann Bartgis; and lifelong friend, Doris Hizer Perry.

Ms. Walkup was a retired licensed cosmetologist and was the owner and operator of Asbury Beauty Bar, Asbury, retiring after 43 years of service. She was a 1963 graduate of Talcott High School, Talcott, and was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Asbury. Ms. Walkup was an artist and avid painter. She loved to do paintings for her family and friends. She also loved to square dance and enjoyed taking square dancing lessons. Ms. Walkup loved to spend time with her family and her friends, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include: two sons, James Howard Vines and wife Lesley Carol of Noble, OK and Marshall L. Walkup and companion Jillian Garner of Asbury; daughter, Rushell “Shelly” Walkup of Williamsburg; brother, Kay Richard Bartgis and wife Susan of Hayes, VA; two sisters, Wilma Jean Ray and husband Guy of Hilldale and Donna Lou Bartgis of Lexington, NC; nine grandchildren, Phil Shaw, Timothy Strahan, Matthew Strahan, Michaela Strahan, Becca Vines, Jennings Walkup, Steven Walkup, Hannah Hinkle and Rachel Walkup; two great-grandchildren, Aiden Shaw and Shilow Shaw; many nieces and nephews; and three lifelong friends, Dorothy Cutlip, Rachel Goodall and Vera Legg.

Memorial services were held Thursday, June 19 at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Asbury, where the Rev. Sam Haught and Pastor Curtis Walkup officiated.

Private interment will be held at a later date at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Ballengee.

Friends may called Thursday at the church before the service.

For those considering an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, HC 71 Box 35, Asbury, WV 24916 or to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.
