The Lewisburg House and Garden Club held its monthly meeting at Peony Hill, the home of Mimi deOlloqui-Turner on July 22. Deloris Dotson and Marit Withrow were the co-hostesses. Those in attendance were President Ghee Gossard, First Vice-President Gretchen Lovett, Second Vice-President Mimi deOlloqui-Turner, Recording Secretary Mary Lindquist, Treasurer Peggy Brown, Suzanne Cronquist, Polley Cunningham, Delores Dotson, Jill Gwinn, Sharon Holladay, Marsha Lewellyn, Sue McKinney, Marit Withrow, Barbara Hiltner and Lynn Weikle.
Dr. Merri Collins, Director of Ecology at Appalachian Headwaters, spoke to the group about native plants. Dr. Collins told the group that native plants don’t have to be your entire focus. She went on to say that a small area of native plants in your yard or garden can have a big impact. Dr. Collins said, “The abundance of native plants (those that were here before any population) in this area is amazing, and they support native insects some of which only survive if they have a certain native plant.”
The group thanked Dr. Collins and proceeded with the business meeting. The next meeting will be Aug. 26 at Appalachian Headwaters’ Wood Thrush Park.
