Dear Editor:
The US House of Representatives voted to cut Medicaid by 700 billion dollars and SNAP (food stamps) by 290 billion dollars. In West Virginia, this would kick a projected 75,000 West Virginians off of Medicaid. Men, women and children would lose their health insurance and food assistance. However, not only would individuals be hurt, but the economy of West Virginia would also take a big hit. Hospitals, clinics and nursing homes rely on Medicaid dollars to treat people and pay employees.
If the Senate passes the “Big, Beautiful Bill” as is, rural hospitals, clinics and nursing homes that rely on Medicaid dollars may close. Please, call your US Senators – Shelly Moore Capito (202-224-6472) and Jim Justice (202-224-3954), and ask them to reject cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. Representative Carol Miller has already voted in favor of the cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in order to give tax breaks to the wealthy.
