There were a total of 33 contestants from kindergarten through fifth grade at Lewisburg Elementary School who entered the Sunflower Contest on September 30, sponsored annually by Lewisburg House and Garden Club.
Fourth grader John Wade, of Ms. Holden’s class, was the Grand Winner with a sunflower measuring 46-1/2 inches. He received a $25 check, a West Virginia bird book and a certificate.
Classroom winners were:
Fifth Grade: Ms. Foster’s class: Lantry McClung, 44-3/4 inches, a close Second Place Overall; Ms. White’s class: Tie between siblings Caden and Rylee Carver, both with exactly 39-3/4 inch sunflowers.
Fourth Grade: Ms. Holden’s class winner and school winner: John Wade, 46-1/2 inches; Ms. Miller’s class: Savannah Sewell, 34 inches; Ms. Stover’s class: Gavin Cherry, 36-1/4 inches;
Third Grade: Ms. Dolan’s class: Noah Shortridge, 33 inches; Ms. Taylor’s class: Gary Morgan, 39 inches; Ms. Sheppard’s class: Ayden Truman, 31 inches;
Second Grade: Ms. Ambler’s class: Ella Butler, 30 inches; Ms. Gray’s class: Kiana McClung, 40 inches; Ms. Nugen’s class: Micah Lane, 34 inches; Ms. McCormick’s class: Mason Carver, 32 inches;
First Grade: Ms. Crane’s class: Arwyn Waid, 30-3/4 inches; Ms. Holliday’s class: Emmy McHale 41 inches; Ms. Hutchinson’s class: Josiah Dehavan, 31-1/2 inches;
Kindergarten: Ms. Johnson’s class: Bella Legg, 32-1/2 inches; Ms. Tipton’s class: Daniel Seams, 37-1/2 inches.
The children are encouraged to feed the sunflower seeds they have grown to the birds during the long winter months.
