Carnegie Hall invites community members to join regional basketmaker Kathy Talley for Fishing Creel Basket, an immersive Appalachian Heritage class held on Friday, May 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This all day workshop, open to participants ages 16 and older, offers a rare opportunity to create a beautiful and functional creel basket inspired by traditional designs used along mountain streams. With a maximum class size of ten, students will enjoy individualized instruction in a relaxed, hands-on environment.
In this intermediate-level workshop, participants will weave a shaped creel basket featuring a wooden lid and full leather strap, allowing it to be comfortably worn at the waist for hands-free carry while foraging creeks and streams. Whether used outdoors or displayed as an heirloom-quality piece of home décor, the finished basket reflects both utility and artistry. Students will learn standard weaving techniques, leather harness incorporation, and the distinctive shaping methods that define the classic side-creel style. All materials and tools will be provided by the instructor.
The cost for the workshop is $145 for members and $165 for nonmembers, with automatic scholarships available that reduce the student rate to just $75. Some prior basket-weaving experience is suggested to ensure participants can fully enjoy the intermediate-level techniques covered in the class.
