It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Wayne Burke, who left us peacefully on Mar. 23, 2025, at the age of 69. Born on May 17, 1955, in a small town filled with love and promise. John grew up to become a man whose kindness, wisdom, and humor left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

John’s life was one of service, dedication, and unwavering love for his family and friends. He was a man who approached every moment with a warm heart and a generous spirit. Whether helping a neighbor, sharing stories with his loved ones, or offering a kind word to a stranger, John had an ability to make others feel seen and valued. His laughter was infectious, and his presence comforting.

A devoted father, grandfather, and friend, John was the cornerstone of his family. He leaves behind his beloved children, grandchildren, and countless loved ones whose lives were enriched by his affection, wisdom, and strength. He was a man of integrity, whose values were rooted in honesty, compassion, and a deep respect for others.

John’s passing leaves a hole in the lives of all who loved him, but we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to guide us. His memory will live on in the stories we share, the lessons he imparted, and the love he so freely gave.

John Wayne Burke is lovingly survived by his wife Terry Burke whom he was married to for 43 years; his children, Nicole Burke and Aaron Griffin (Chastity Casto); his grandchildren, Jeremy Griffin, Evan Griffin, Christopher Griffin, Nathaniel Gray, and Willow Burke; his great-grandchildren, Keegan Griffin and Viktoria Yarber. He is also survived by his siblings, Andy Burke (Wilda Burke), Pat Gross (Mike Gross), Herman Covington, Mary Merson, Debra Griffin, and Michael Griffin.

John leaves behind a cherished group of nieces and nephews: Nikita Honaker (James Honaker), Theresa Barnes, Dwayne Covington, Christina Esh (Dan Esh), Mike and Brian Gross, Tammy Merson/Walls, Frankie Merson, Joe Ryan, Michelle Merson, and Caroleann Nodonly. He is also survived by his great-nieces and great-nephews: Lilah Esh, Ethan Esh, Ashley Covington, Anthony Covington, Jimmy Barnes, Timmy Barnes, Jonathan Barnes, Matthew Barnes, and Samantha.

John is also survived by his beloved dogs, Suzy and Lucky, who brought him joy and companionship throughout his life. John’s legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will continue to live on in all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service will be held for family and friends at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Apr. 3, at the River of Life Church of God in Alderson.

Rest in peace, John. You were deeply loved, and you will be greatly missed.

Alderson Funeral Services and Smathers Funeral Chapel is honored to assist John and his family during their great time of need. Online condolences are encouraged at www.smathersfuneralchapelinc.com
