Ronceverte-Joe Jackson Honaker, 87, passed away Monday, Aug. 17, 2020, at home.
Joe was born Sept. 19, 1932, in Ronceverte to the late Verdie Jackson and Elva Gertrude Morgan Honaker.
Joe was retired from Bluegrass Electric and the Greenbrier Sporting Club. He was a member and Deacon at Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church in Ronceverte. He was a longtime member of Valley View Country Club at White Sulphur Springs. Joe was known as “Captain Joe” around his longtime golfing buddies.
He was also a proud US Army Veteran and a National Guardsman.
Joe adored his family and friends and loved spending time with them. He had a special knack for storytelling and those who knew him so enjoyed listening. Joe had a passion for golfing. There weren’t many days that you wouldn’t find him on the golf course if he wasn’t working. Throughout the years Joe had developed a large extended golf family.
Other than his parents, Joe was preceded in death by daughters, Bonita J. Masters in 2004 and Rita J. Honaker in 2019; sister, Lena Hitchcock; and brothers, James and Jack Honaker.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Wilda Morgan Honaker; sons, Lanny Honaker and wife Dr. Terri Elliott of Lewisburg, and Steve Honaker and wife Rita E. Honaker of Ronceverte; grandchildren, Laura Witt and husband Paul of Dawson, Jared Masters and wife Alyssa of White Sulphur Springs, Eric Honaker of Raleigh, NC, Carrie Neese and husband Cory of Lewisburg and Jordon Masters and fiancé Whitney of Morgantown; great-grandchildren, Tyler O’Brien, Jacob Witt, Sophia Masters and Owen Neese; sister, Freda Deskins of Pickaway; brothers, Jesse Honaker and wife June of Lindside, Jerry Honaker and wife Letha of Ronceverte, and Judson Honaker of Ronceverte; and son-in-law, Frank Masters of Ronceverte.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte with Pastor Norvel Mann officiating. Burial with military rights will follow in the Morgan Cemetery.
A walk through visitation will be held from 12 noon until the service time of 2 p.m.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
