Caldwell-James W. “Jim” Diem, 89, passed away Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at Greenbrier Manor.

He was born at Fort Spring on June 24, 1924, the son of the late James Frederick Diem and Rachel Faye Lawhorn Diem.

Mr. Diem was a World War II Army Veteran. He worked and retired from the telephone company with over 37 years of service. He was a member of Zion’s Light Baptist Church, the WV Farm Bureau. Greenbrier County Cattlemen’s Association and the Telephone Pioneers. He enjoyed farming and raising his children on the far

Mr. Diem was preceded in death by: his eldest son, James Fredrick Diem; sister, Charlotte Boyd; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia Hutchinson and Burton Hutchinson; and sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Jim Ramsey.

Mr. Diem is survived by: his wife of 64 years, Anilee Shafer Diem of Caldwell; three children, Deborah J. Diem of Caldwell, Keith Diem and wife Debbie of Caldwell and Karl Diem and wife Kay P. Diem of Caldwell. He is also survived by Fred’s widow, Patricia Diem of Belle Haven, VA; grandchildren, James Walter Diem and wife Heather of Belle Haven, VA, Stephanie Zodun and husband Mike of Belle Haven, VA, Laura Bond and husband Russ of Beaver, Nicole Smith and husband Jason of Caldwell, Kyle Diem of Caldwell and Karee Diem of Caldwell; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Abby and Ashley Zodun, Madison and Sarah Diem, all of Belle Haven, VA.

Pallbearers were: James E. Shafer, David Shafer, Kenny Shafer, Montie Shafer, Eddie McDowell and Mark Shafer. Honorary pallbearers were: William “Bill” E. Shafer, Donald L. Shafer and Winifred Baker.

Services were held Wednesday, Dec. 18 at Zion’s Light Baptist Church where Pastor Gary Baker officiated.

Burial was in the McLean Cemetery.

Friends called Tuesday evening, Dec. 17 at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be mad to either The Gideons, P.O. Box 1380, Lewisburg, WV 24901 or Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
