White Sulphur Springs-James Palmer White, 91, departed this life Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018 at his residence.

He was born Oct. 11, 1926, in Alvon, the son of Ida Sue White. After his mother’s death at age 3 he was raised by his grandmother, Cora Boggs White.

James was especially proud of his Army service during WWII. He entered the service in February 1945, serving three years in The Philippines and New Guinea. He also took great pride in his service at The Greenbrier Hotel, where he retired in 1998 after years of service keeping the grounds pristine and the flower beds full of beautiful blooms.

Preceding him in death other than his mother and grandmother were: an infant brother and sister; his beloved grandson, Jon Robert McDowell; and the mother of his children, Gracie Dalton White.

Surviving are: daughter, Anita McDowell (Estel) and son, Jimmy White (Sue); grandchildren, Jaired White (Michelle), Jessica White (Lisa), Jana White, Lani Freeman (John), Cari Reed (Mark) and stepgrandson, Perry Lee McDowe1l (Marti); great-grandchildren, Lane White, Amber O’Connor (Kieran), Lyndi White, Jaxon, Mace and Maddix Dolan-White, Makenzie and Reilly Honaker, and Jenna Palmer Reed; step-great-granddaughter, Courtney McDowell; and great-great-granddaughter, Callie O’Connor. He is also survived by his special friend, Lynne Bland.

The family wants to thank caretaker Sandra Loudermilk and neighbor Mitch Stoessel for making it possible for James to remain at home. Very special thanks to Greg and Terry Lockhan who faithfully cooked and delivered his dinner every Sunday for years. True friends are a blessing like no other.

Funeral services for Mr. White ere held Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018, at Wild Meadow Baptist Church where Rev. Roger McDaniel officiated. Interment followed in Mapledale Cemetery.

The family received their friends Tuesday at the church before the service.
