James Christian “Chris” Ward, 54, of Hickory, NC, passed away unexpectedly on Mar. 28, 2026, while hiking with his beloved wife.

Chris, or Christian to family and loved ones, was born in York, Pennsylvania, and spent his childhood in Lewisburg, WV. He later made his home in Hickory, where he lived for more than 30 years and built a life centered on family, career, and community.

He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from West Virginia University and went on to build a distinguished career at Century Furniture, where he faithfully served since 1997 and most recently held the position of Vice President of Finance. Chris was widely respected for his intelligence, insight, and steady leadership.

An avid hiker and trail runner, Christian found joy in time spent on the trails. He enjoyed pushing himself in endurance runs and completed many 50k races as well as 100k distances. He was also a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan and true WVU Mountaineer. Years of marriage to UNC Alum, Wendy, and the influence of friends and colleagues turned him into a Tarheel, especially if Pitt was the opponent.

Known for his quiet and humble nature, Christian also carried a lighthearted spirit and a touch of quirky humor that those close to him will always remember. He had a simple way of connecting with others – often offering a thumbs up, a fist bump, and a reminder to smile.

His internal compass was directed by his faith and expressed in his daily life through his kindness, goodness, humility, and wisdom.

Above all, Christian was a loving and devoted husband, father, and friend whose steady presence brought strength and comfort to those around him.

He is survived by his cherished wife, Wendy Lowman Ward; their son, Ethan Brock Garrett; his mother, Pamala Fleshman and her husband, Kerry Fleshman; his sister, Melanie Zopp and her husband, Bill Zopp; and his beloved beagle, Watash. He was preceded in death by his father, James Ward.

A service to celebrate Christian’s life will be held at Morganton First Church of God on Apr. 2, at 11 a.m. with Pastor John Henderson officiating, with a receiving of friends beginning at 10 a.m. Following the service, Christian will be entombed at Burke Memorial Park Cemetery.

Flowers may be sent to the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Old Fort Strong via campgrier.org Donate Now button and select Old Fort Strong or by check to Camp Grier, 985 Camp Grier Rd., Old Fort, NC 28762 with Old Fort Strong/Chris Ward in the memo.

Christian will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His quiet strength, kind heart, and simple gestures of encouragement will live on in the lives he touched.
