Due to federal funding cuts, the High Rocks Educational Corporation’s AmeriCorps program was eliminated in late April. However, rain or shine, camp will go on as scheduled. High Rocks Academy, offers two summer camp sessions for girls including Camp New Beginnings, for middle school girls, and Camp Steele for those in high school.
Since 1996, these camps have served girls from various income levels across the state. Despite the cuts to AmeriCorps, High Rocks is committed to empowering, inspiring, and educating young girls in West Virginia and will proceed with summer programs. Both camps are free, and applications are currently being accepted. High Rocks believes that all young people benefit, regardless of their economic background, and is dedicated to fundraising to ensure that no girl is turned away due to financial constraints.
“High Rocks will continue to offer camp free of charge,” stated Development Director Leah Deitz. “Each summer, we see how girls gain confidence and leadership skills at camp. This type of empowerment is crucial for these young ladies as they pursue successful careers and become changemakers in their communities. We work hard to fundraise and provide this opportunity to girls from all economic backgrounds, and we will continue to seek support despite the funding cuts to our AmeriCorps program.”
Camp New Beginnings begins on Sunday, June 15, and includes classes in math and science, creative expression, leadership journey, and equestrian activities within a “classroom without walls” experience. Camp Steele starts on Sunday, July 12, featuring a variety of courses. The application process includes filling out an application and completing a short phone interview.
We are actively raising donations to keep the camp free for all campers. Your support is essential in this effort. To contribute, make an online donation, or obtain an application visit www.highrocks.org or contact 304-653-4891.
