Spring is a time for growth and transformation, a time to start fresh and embrace new beginnings. It is no coincidence that our first camp of the summer has the same meaning and bears the same name, New Beginnings. The camp starts the journey for 7th grade girls who are looking for a challenge and want to join High Rocks Academy for Girls.

High Rocks Academy for Girls is an award-winning leadership program for 7th-12th grade girls in Pocahontas, Nicholas, and Greenbrier counties. Our programs combine educational experience with life skills through summer camps, college trips, community service, and much more. Through the variety of programs we offer, our High Rocks girls are able to learn a new skill, get help with homework, visit the college of their dreams, or meet new friends. High Rocks is currently looking for girls who are creative, motivated, and have a desire to change the world.

Every spring, High Rocks Academy for Girls begins recruiting for New Beginnings Camp and Camp Steele, our camp for older and returning girls. We spent the last month visiting five middle schools presenting to around 200 students in our tri-county area; Marlinton Middle School, Green Bank Middle School, Summersville Middle School, Richwood Middle School, and Eastern Greenbrier Middle School. Our presentation consisted of staff, AmeriCorps members, and current High Rocks girls offering an overview of programs, showing a short video, and answering questions pertaining to all aspects of the program.

During the presentation, the students were very interested to hear about our “classroom without walls,” our approach to educational classes that take place outside the traditional classroom during camps. The possibility of making brownies in their math class or searching for plants for science class really made girls excited about attending class during summer. Other topics of interests included having a class with horses, hiking to the secret waterfall, or having a dance party while cleaning up after dinner. Mainly, we wanted to let the prospective girls know that High Rocks is for them and whatever interest or aspiration they may have in life.

We are currently accepting applications for New Beginnings Camp (7th graders) and Camp Steele (8th-12th graders). If you know a girl that would be interested in joining High Rocks or would like more information about becoming a High Rocks girl, please contact Kendra Taylor at kendra@highrocks.org or 304-653-4891. For more information about High Rocks, please visit our website at www.highrocks.org or find HighRocks EducationalCorporation on Facebook.
