OBIT HughesDefiance-Helen Hughes, 102, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at the Twin Rivers Care and Rehabilitation Center, Defiance.
Helen was born Mar. 4, 1911, to Richard and Margaret (Hardin) Barnsgrove in Sutton.
On Mar. 12, 1941, she married Evertt Hughes and he passed away on May 21, 1951.
She retired after 25 years as Secretary to the Parole Board at Alderson Federal Reformatory for Women. Helen loved watching football and basketball, crocheting, doing needlepoint, playing cards and traveling. She also enjoyed spending time with her family.
Helen is survived by: her son, Richard (Barbara) Hughes of Defiance; grandchildren, Greg Parsons of Defiance, Craig Parsons of Defiance, Mike Hughes of Defiance; 13 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Virginia Coulter of St. Louis, MO.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Evertt Hughes; daughter, Helen Hughes; grandson, Ricky Parsons; and siblings, Betty Price, Ann Lytle, Drusilla Donovan, Kathrine Gunnoe, Margaret Barnsgrove and Richard Barnsgrove.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, where Rev. Donald L Luhring officiated.
The family received friends two hours prior to the service.
Memorials are suggested to the St. John Lutheran Church.
