By Sarah Mansheim

This week, kids from all over Greenbrier County attended day camps, learning about everything from swimming to ballet to playing the ukulele.

The annual Scout Day Camp was held in the Greenbrier National Forest, attracting campers of all ages to spend their days learning crafts, swimming, and singing. The annual favorite day camp brings hundreds of kids to the forest each year.

Also, this week Carnegie Hall began its Carnegie Kids’ College, where young scholars and artists try their hands at things like cooking, rocket building and, as mentioned above, learning to play the ukulele. Carnegie Kids’ College continues next week.

Just down the street, ballerinas congregated at Valley Dance Studio to study with West Virginia ballet great Jerry Rose, a director of Beckley Dance Theatre and cast member of the 1987 film Dirty Dancing. The girls also danced with Rose’s daughter, Beckley Dance Theatre faculty member Heather Rose Zicafoose, and Valley Dance Studio director Cate Bennett.

Kids from the Scout Day Camp spell out a big “Thank-You” to all the volunteers and local businesses who donated to the camp, without whom camp would not be possible.
