Greenbrier West’s girls volleyball team won a best-of-five match against Valley Tuesday evening, taking the first three games in a row. West’s record is now 15-13-1, with one tri-match remaining, against Nicholas County and Buckhannon.
Cindy Nutter, West’s head coach, said after the game, “Good game tonight, the girls played together, the seniors are amazing.” Speaking of the season, Nutter said, “It started slow. We’ve improved as the season has gone on. A couple of highlights were beating Fayetteville and Greater Beckley, two teams we’ve had trouble with in the past. We’re looking forward to the sectionals. The girls are bound and determined to go to states.”
Sectionals begin next Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Appalachian Bible College in Beckley. West will be seeded Number 2 in its sectional. West will play the winner of a match between Mount View and Meadow Bridge. Greenbrier West honored its seniors, Skyler Snuffer and Lynzee McClung, Tuesday.
John Thompson, Valley’s head coach, is in his seventh year of coaching girls volleyball. A Single A school, like West, Thompson says his teams have trouble keeping up because there is no volleyball program at the middle school their students come from. Valley High School is located in Smithers, near Montgomery. They played West earlier this season, losing in three games.
