The Richlands Ruritan Club, at their meeting on Apr. 9, were entertained by a presentation from Kelly Childers, the Manager of the Greenbrier Landfill. Ms. Childers has been managing the landfill since 2016 and is certified by the state to manage the landfill.
In 1989 the Greenbrier Valley Solid Waste Authority took over management of landfill operations. The Public Service Commission approves operations and sets fees. In addition to Greenbrier County, the landfill serves Monroe, Fayette, Pocahontas, and Summers counties. As part of the operations, any runoff water is collected in two ponds. The water is then sent to the Ronceverte Water Treatment facility before being released to the Greenbrier River. The landfill has eight full-time employees and processes approximately 2,700 tons per month.
The Richlands Ruritan club voted to donate $100 to the Humane Society as requested by Ms. Childers
The following officers were elected, at the March meeting, by acclamation for 2025: President Lucie Refsland, Vice President Steve Harris, Secretary Jack Tuckwiller, and Treasurer Cliff Gillilan.
The Richlands Ruritans club meets on the second Wednesday of each month for a dinner meeting at the Calvary Methodist Church on Midland Trail East in Richlands. The Ruritan Civic organization is a national network of clubs working together for a stronger America. The Ruritans’ focus is to support community services in small towns and rural communities across America. The Ruritans, founded in 1928 in Holland, Virginia, are celebrating their 97th year of service to local communities. The Richlands Ruritans Club provides scholarships to local college students and 4-H campers.
