A Green Bank couple who have been trained in the classical music of the traditional Catholic Latin Mass provide the music leadership at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, White Sulphur Springs, on the first Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. for the Latin Mass, which serves as meeting the Sunday obligation of Mass attendance for Roman Catholics, including the one May 1.
Father James Conyers, pastorial associate for St. Charles Borromeo, St. Louis, King of France, Church in Lewisburg, and St. Catherine of Siena Church in Ronceverte, officiates for the Masses which are considered a classical musical work by many.
Dr. Leszek Fiutowski serves as organist with Victoria Fiutowski serving as choir director for the special choir which also features tenor Dr. Ron Scobbo and soprano Jeanne Scobbo. The Fiutowskis are Green Bank-area residents while the Scobbos are from White Sulphur Springs. Other choir members come from the area Catholic churches choirs.
Located on US 60 West, across from The Greenbrier Hotel Clinic, St. Charles Borromeo Church is handicapped accessible and fully air conditioned.
The public, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, are invited to participate in the Latin Masses which were the same as used world-wide by the Roman Catholic church until the 1960s when Vatican II ordered the Mass to be in the vernacular.
