West Virginia Board of Education Policy 2423: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention is being phased in over a four-year period and requires a comprehensive physical examination and dental examination within one year of the start of school for students entering second (2nd) grade this coming school year, 2016-2017. PreK and Kindergarten students are already required to provide this documentation. In school year 2017-2018 it will be necessary for seventh grade students and in school year 2018-2019 for students in grade 12.
By the completion of the phase-in period, all students starting PreK, Kindergarten, seventh and 12th grades will need to provide record of a dental and physical examination that was completed within one year of the start of school.
Assistance will be provided to families who indicate they have no dentist, health care provider, and/or insurance. This policy is not intended to be punitive. No student will be kept out of school for failure to provide the examination records. For additional information contact Paula McCoy, lead school nurse for Greenbrier County Schools at 304-647-6470.
