Fall computer courses at DSLCC

Dabney S. Lancaster Community College (DSLCC) is offering a variety of non-credit computer courses this fall, for beginners and more advanced students in two locations: the DSLCC main campus in Clifton Forge, VA, and the Rockbridge Regional Center (RRC) in Buena Vista, VA. Classes on the main campus will be held on Monday evenings in Room 504, McCarthy Hall. Classes at the RRC will be held on Wednesday evenings in Room 907. The instructor is Ed Mays. Accompanying textbooks may be purchased in the DSLCC bookstore or ordered by calling 540-862-4322. Students should also bring a flash drive to class.
Computers for the Absolute Beginner is a three-night class and will be held from 6- 8:30 p.m. on the main campus on Mondays, Sept. 19 and 26 and Oct. 3, and at the RRC on Wednesdays, Sept. 21 and 28 and Oct. 5. The class is for anyone who has never turned on a computer or is intimidated by them. Tuition is $65, and the textbook is “Welcome to the World of Computers, 5th ed.”
Introduction to Computers I is a three-night class and will be held from 6- 8:30 p.m. on the main campus on Mondays, Oct. 10, 17 and 24, and the RRC on Wednesdays, Oct. 12, 19 and 26. This is a continuation of the beginner course. Tuition is $65, and the textbook is “Microsoft Office 2013.”
Excel for Beginners is a one-night class scheduled from 6-9 p.m. on the main campus on Monday, Oct. 31, and at the RRC on Wednesday, Nov. 2. This is a workshop to prepare students to begin using spreadsheet software. Tuition is $55, and no book is required.
Introduction to Computers II is a three-night class and will held from 6-8:30 p.m. on the main campus on Mondays, Nov. 7, 14 and 28, and at the RRC on Wednesdays, Nov. 9, 16 and 30. This class includes an overview of Excel and PowerPoint, and is a continuation of Intro to Computers I. Tuition is $65; the same book is used for Intro I and II.
Excel 2013, Level 1 will be held from 6-9 p.m. on the main campus on Mondays, Dec. 5, 12 and 19, and at the RRC on Wednesdays, Dec. 7, 14 and 21. Students will learn to design worksheets, work with formulas and functions, and create charts. Students should have prior computer knowledge as well as basic knowledge of Excel, be familiar with working with spreadsheets, or have completed the Intro to Computers II course. The textbook is “Excel 2013, Level 1,” and the tuition fee is $85.
