Elements of memorable promposals

For the truly unique promgoer, merely asking one’s prospective date, “Will you go to prom with me?” won’t cut it. It’s impossible to determine which bold teenager should be credited with the first “promposal,” but this unique way of asking a friend and/or classmate to prom has become increasingly popular in recent years.

A promposal is an elaborate way to ask someone to prom. There are no rules governing promposals, but promgoers who want to impress their would-be dates (and not scare off those dates’ parents) would be wise to include certain elements to make their promposals more memorable.

The element of surprise

Perhaps the most important element of memorable promposals is that of surprise. Surprising a would-be date with an elaborate promposal is sure to create a lasting memory. Those doing the asking should not go too far with the element of surprise, as it’s still important to respect a would-be date’s privacy and his or her wishes. For example, if the person you want to ask is not especially fond of public attention, then don’t surprise this person at school or school functions, which is bound to draw attention from fellow students. And make sure you don’t confuse surprising your would-be date with scaring them. Scaring someone you want to take to prom likely won’t produce the answer you’re looking for, so make sure you surprise them in ways that show your respect.

Creativity

A little creativity can go a long way toward making promposals memorable. Try to think outside the box when crafting your promposal, enlisting the help of friends and family members if need be. A little self-deprecation can be endearing, so if your creativity takes you somewhere new, like dancing with your two left feet or singing your tone deaf way into your would-be date’s heart, don’t be afraid to go all-in.

Safety

It might not be the most fun component to consider, but safety should always be a priority when crafting a promposal. Don’t risk your life or the life of your prospective date just to ask this person to prom. You want a promposal to be memorable for all the right reasons, and not because it ended in injury or a trip to the hospital.

Fun

The promposal should be fun for both parties. Keep it simple and light, recognizing that being asked to prom can sometimes be as nerve-wracking as asking someone to prom. A pressure-free promposal that allows a prospective date to comfortably accept or decline the invitation is essential.

Promposals can make prom night even more memorable, especially when they include various elements that make the experience enjoyable for both parties.
