Election results yield Trump victory; Justice wins governor’s seat

jim-justice donald-trump stephen-baldwinRepublican presidential nominee Donald Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton in the election Tuesday.

In West Virginia, Trump took an easy victory over Clinton overall, defeating her handily in Greenbrier County and across the state. In fact, Greenbrier County, and West Virginia as a whole, continue to become almost entirely Republican, as local votes only yielded three Democrat wins where there was a contest: Jim Justice as governor, incumbent John D. Perdue as state treasurer, and locally, Stephen Baldwin as 42nd District delegate, where he will join Republican incumbent George “Boogie” Ambler in the West Virginia Legislator. (Democrats Louvonne Arbuckle (circuit clerk), Robin Loudermilk (county clerk), Sheriff Jan Cahill and Assessor Joe Darnell ran unopposed, so they keep their seats.)

Greenbrier County election results were waylaid by technical difficulties when the county clerk’s computer that held the tallies crashed on Tuesday night. Loudermilk was able to get another computer from a different county and released unofficial results shortly after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office did not release unofficial results until late Wednesday afternoon. According to the secretary of state website, unofficial voter turnout was 57.2 percent with 728,248 ballots cast.

Also, Greenbrier Countians passed the brunch bill, which will allow restaurants to serve alcohol to customers on Sunday mornings. Voters passed the bill 7,066-6,438.
