Lewisburg-Elaine Dianne (Hinkle) Canterbury, 63, passed away on Dec. 13, 2023, at UVA Hospital in Virginia. She was born on June 6, 1960.

Elaine is survived by her loving husband, David Canterbury; her father, Maynard “Brownie’ Hinkle; her brother, Maynard Lee Hinkle; her sister, Elizabeth “Beth” Hinkle; her special daughter, Sarah Taylor Morgan; her special granddaughters, Ainsley Taylor Sparks and Laurel Morgan; and her special sister, Judy Henson. She was preceded in death by her mother, Dianne Fawcett Hinkle.

Elaine was a beloved elementary school teacher in Greenbrier County Schools. Her passion and gift for teaching and entertaining her students with special stories, activities, and lessons made her a cherished educator. Elaine’s ability to connect with children effortlessly and her talent for storytelling made her an exception teacher. She retired due to disability.

Elaine had a vibrant personality and a wide range of interests. She enjoyed her dogs much like children. She loved spending time with her large extended family and countless friends. Her joy and laughter were contagious, and she had a gift for vividly recounting events in her life and others. Her ability to forge deep connections and remember details of her friends’ lives led her to have many friendships that spanned decades and geography. She derived great joy from giving to others and celebrating their accomplishments.

Elaine was a member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church since birth along with generations of her family.

A memorial service to celebrate Elaine’s life was held at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, located at 884 Jefferson Street North, Lewisburg, on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Visitation was held before the service. Burial followed in Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg. Pastor Bev Colombo officiated the services.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Elaine’s memory can be made to the Greenbrier Valley Humane Society, located at 151 Holliday Lane, Lewisburg WV 24901.

Elaine Canterbury will be remembered for her infectious laughter, her gift for storytelling, her strength to cope with Lupus and her love for family and friends. She touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
