Midland, MI-Dr. Gertrud Brecht, 93, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2013.
She was born June 18, 1920, to the late Friedrich Wilhelm and Borghild (Engvoldsen) Goebel in Larvik, Norway, moving to Germany as a child.
In 1948, Dr. Brecht completed her medical studies in Freiburg, Germany. She married Hans Brecht in Canada and immigrated to the United States in 1951, settling in Huntington, WV, where their son, Thoralf was born. After moving to Cincinnati, OH, she completed her residency and practiced medicine from 1957 to 1978 at the Meeker Clinic, General Hospital and her own private practice. Following the death of her husband in 1985, Gertrud moved to Maxwelton. In 2011, she moved to Midland, MI to be closer to her son.
Whether it was the Alps of Germany, the mountains of their camp in West Virginia or the trees of her back yard in Midland, MI, she enjoyed the mountains and outdoors. Dr. Brecht maintained her medical license and medical memberships until her death.
She is survived by: her son and daughter-in-law, Thoralf and Karen Brecht of Midland.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Ingeborg Goebel of Bad Reichenhall, Germany.
Funeral and committal services for Dr. Brecht were conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 29, from the Wilson Miller Funeral Home, 4210 N. Saginaw Road, Midland, Michigan where Pastor Dan Youmans of Lighthouse Body of Christ Church officiated.
Interment will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Cincinnati, OH.
Visitation was held Tuesday at the funeral home before the service.
