Dear Recycle Lady,
Thanks for the column. It seems that Lowes accepts compact fluorescent bulbs, but not the tubes. Any other suggestions?
Long Time Recycler
Dear Long Time Recycler,
Lowes in Beckley said they recycle fluorescent tubes, but not to leave them with the other recyclables. Ask for Customer Service. Call Lowes in Lewisburg and ask for their Customer Service. Perhaps they will have the same policy.
Dear Recycle Lady,
We have older horses that need supplemental horse feed to keep them at a healthy weight. I have been saving the feed bags so I can recycle them but cannot find a center that will take them. There are two types of bags: #4 and #5. I have about 100 feed bags and I would really like to recycle them rather than put them in the landfill. Where can I recycle #4 and #5 feed bags?
Thanks, Mr. Ed
Dear Mr. Ed,
According to www.producer.com/2013/05/recycling-plastic-grain-bags-just-got-a-whole-lot-easier/, #5 plastic bags are made of polypropylene, which is recyclable. However, more research is needed, especially considering the number of bags. Hopefully, I will have a more specific answer for you in the near future.
Dear Recycle Lady,
I read that there were more straws littering beaches than any other kind of plastic. Do you know if this information is correct?
Doubting Thomas
Dear Doubting Thomas,
I don’t think your information is entirely correct. It may be true on some beaches and not others. According to International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) volunteers, candy and other food wrappers have now replaced cigarettes as the number one item found littering beaches around the world. Halloween candy will contribute tons of plastic packaging.
To all my readers: Happy Halloween. Be safe and have a spooky good time!
