“On July 25, 2026, the General Andrew Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of The American Revolution (DAR) participated in the Greenbrier Historical Society’s recreation of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in our area. This reading was held in front of the county courthouse in Lewisburg, in honor of the July 20, 1776 order for every Virginia county sheriff to conduct such a public reading.”
The celebration was filled with the pageantry of the Augusta County Militia Fife and Drum Corps and the presenting of the Colors by the WV Sons of the American Revolution. Vice Regent Judy Deegans represented the Andrew Lewis Chapter by acknowledging the honor of doing so and the honor of her Patriot by leading the Pledge of Allegiance.
The celebration continued at the Greenbrier Historical Society’s North House Museum. Participants and attendees were invited to a reception put on by the General Andrew Lewis Chapter.
Members made cookies and fresh lemonade to serve the guests.
