Last fall, the WV Healthy Kids and Families Coalition announced a four-part series of community organizing and writing workshops. Those trainings are now coming to Southern West Virginia. The trainings will be held on Friday, Jan. 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at New River Community and Technical College in Lewisburg.

There will be four in-depth trainings, including Organizing 101, Negotiation Skills, Community-Building, and Writing/Communications. Trainers are Stephen Smith and Kate Long.

RSVP to trythiswv@gmail.com with “EP Training” in the subject heading. Lunch is provided and training is free; donations are welcome.

There will also be a special lunchtime presentation on the Try This initiative. Folks who are interested in healthy lifestyles and community development are encouraged to attend.

The classes to be offered are:

• “Organizing 101: Six Steps for Making Change,” with Stephen Smith

• “The Melian Debate: Practicing the Skills of Power and Negotation,” with Stephen Smith

• “Language as an Organizing Tool: Writing and Talks that Grab People,” with Kate Long

• “Build a Neighborhood: Organizing, Team-Building, and Poverty,” with Stephen Smith

All classes have limited capacity, so people are encouraged to register early.
