In an effort to help those families who are lacking food in our communities, Christ Our Savior of the Valley Lutheran Church will host a “Kids Against Hunger Packing Event” on Wednesday evening, Apr. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Alderson Community Center. Kids Against Hunger Coalition is a nonprofit organization that packages and ships highly nutritious, life-saving meals to starving and malnourished children and adults in developing countries and the United States. They do that by mobilizing the energy and caring of American children, teens and adults on behalf of the hungry around the world.
The meal ingredients are formulated by food scientists to provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates and vitamins. The food is a mix of white rice, fortified crush soy – 52 percent protein, a blend of six dehydrated vegetables and 21 vitamins and minerals. The total cost for each meal is 28 cents. The meals have shelf life of three years and require six cups of boiling water to prepare each meal.
Partnering with Christ Our Savior of the Valley will be 71 of Faith Lutheran’s, Troy Michigan High School Youth Group, who will be helping with the “Packing Event” on Apr. 8. They will be helping local volunteers reach the goal of packaging 30,000 meals at this event.
Rev. Dr. Richard Lohmeyer, pastor of Christ Our Savior of the Valley said that volunteers from the community are needed and encouraged to help package the 30,000 meals and he is inviting everyone to come to Alderson for this event in an effort to help feed the hungry in our community. The starting time is 7 p.m. at the Alderson Community Center. He noted that with 200 volunteers the task should be completed in an hour and a half and all meals will be used in our local community. “This cause is very important to me,” he said, “The hungry give me a heavy heart.”
Donations are also being accepted to fund the event. The total cost is $8,000 and donations can be mailed to: Christ Our Savior of the Valley Lutheran Church, 810 N. Jefferson Street, Lewisburg, WV 24901.
