Mar. 10, 1925-Jan. 28, 2022

Rainelle-Charles Roscoe McQuain, Jr. completed his journey through life on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022. He was 96 years old. He was the fifth child of Charles Roscoe McQuain, Sr. and Lola Bowyer McQuain of Rainelle in Greenbrier County.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters, two half-brothers, and four half-sisters; first wife, Audrey Morris McQuain; second wife, Mavis “Penny” Morris McQuain; and stepson, John Morris.

He leaves two children, Nancy Kay McQuain Payne formerly of Athens and Vicki Ann Gross of Princeton; two stepchildren, Jewell Morris Dean (Mike) of Ashland, VA, and David Scott Morris (Brenda) of Fayetteville. He was a proud grandfather of Patricia Gross Haworth (Stephen) of Villa Park, IL, Rebecca Gross of Princeton and Leeanne McQuain Payne of Bedford, VA. He was a step-grandfather to Melissa Mathes (Mike) of Mechanicsburg, VA, Jerri Lynn Mullen (Tony) of Bradenton, FL, Brian Scott Morris (deceased) and Alana Morris Palmer (Cody) of Princeton. He was a great-grandfather to Evan Thomas Haworth of Villa Park, IL, and step-great-grandfather of seven other children. He also leaves behind beloved half-sister, Gail McQuain Hanshew (Gary) of Meadow Bridge.

He was a veteran of WWII where he toured Belgium, Germany and France with the 569th AAA AW Army Battalion.

He was a proud railroader following in the tracks of his father for over 40 years, working for the N.F.&G. Railroad, the C&O and finally retiring from the CSX Railroad in 1988. With the help of his wife, Penny, he wrote “A Brief History of the N.F.&G.” He loved railroading, reading his newspapers, to cheer on WVU and dance. He was a member of Sewell Valley Baptist Church, the Lions Club, and served on the Greenbrier County Commission on Aging Board of Directors for seven years. He was head “gravy maker” for the Sewell Valley Baptist Churchmen’s breakfast for many years.

The family wishes to thank Fred and Mary Heath of Camp Creek for their loving care of our precious father, Roscoe.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 26 at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle.

We love you, Dad.
