Monday, Jan. 10, marked the opening of the candidacy filing window at the Secretary of State’s office for all those interested in running for state positions in the 2022 elections.

According to a statement released by the Secretary of State’s office, “Monday [Jan. 10] marked the first day that people interested in the May 10th Primary Election could file to run for a particular office, and 61 candidates from throughout the state filed official paperwork to run for office.”

The filing period runs through Jan. 29, and all interested parties are encouraged to apply. The application process can be undertaken in Charleston at the Capitol, Clarksburg, Martinsburg, or by mail. Applicants are required, whether applying by mail or in person, to have their application notarized by a notary of the public.

As of writing, the state offices up for election in our region are a seat in the State Senate District 10, and seats in the House of Delegates Districts 46 and 47. In Senate District 10 there are currently three candidates listed: Stephen Baldwin (D – Ronceverte – Incumbent), Vincent Deeds (R, Renick), and Thomas Perkins (R, Frankford). Currently in State House District 46, recent appointee Mike Honaker (R, Lewisburg) has filed to run. In District 47, Todd Longanacre (R, Alderon – Incumbent) is the lone candidate filed as of press time.

The second seat in Senate District 10 is not up for election, however the holder of that seat, Jack Woodrum (R, Hinton) will be running for Republican State Executive Committee for Senate District 10.

County wide, there are three candidates filed currently for three positions: John Wyatt (R, Rainelle) is seeking election to the Greenbrier County Republican Executive Committee, J.L. “Danny” Campbell (R, Lewisburg) is seeking election to the House of Delegates Republican Executive Committee for House District 46, and Louvonne Legg Arbuckle (D, Lewisburg) is running for Circuit Clerk.

All statements of filings and applicants are subject to change. The Mountain Messenger will publish the complete list of applicants at the close of the application period on Jan 29.
