Salem, VA-Barbara Ann Griffith Long, 83, one of God’s Angels, was called home on her birthday, May 23, 2018, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem, VA.

Barbara was born May 23, 1935, in Covington, VA, the daughter of the late Sheila Cary and Virginia James Paxton Griffith.

She was a member of the Women’s Army Corp from 1954 to 1955. She was a Proud American. Barbara worked at The Greenbrier Hotel, waitressing for 42 and a half years. She never knew a stranger. She was a survivor of the 2016 flood, but it took a toll on her beautiful heart.

Preceding her in death, other than her parents, were her husband, Albert Leroy Long; seven brothers, Clarence, Sheila “Jr.”, John “Jack”, Ernest, Larry and James all Griffiths; four sisters, Catherine Smith, Mary Tucker, Ella Mae Howell and Alwilda Gilmore; and a “special” nephew, Avery Wayne Simmons.

She will be sadly missed by her sons, Richard “Buster” Long and wife Tammy, and David Long; daughters, Pat McCoy and Tana Unroe, along with eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 29, at the Whatcoat United Methodist Church where Pastors James “Jimmy” Long and Ed Craft officiated. Interment was in Allegheny Burial Park at Lowmoor, VA.

The family received friends at the church Monday evening, May 28.

Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs is in charge of arrangements.
