Nancy Ratliff and Ms. Shrader

The Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma celebrated the extraordinary teaching career of Hazel Shrader and recognized her 50-year membership in Delta Kappa Gamma at the April meeting at Food & Friends in Lewisburg. Barbara Holesapple chronicled Ms. Shrader’s life, which began in August, 1922, on the family farm in Pickaway, Monroe County, where she dreamed of becoming a teacher.

This dream was realized in 1942 when she earned a normal school degree from Marshall which enabled her to begin teaching at Willow Bend School. One year later, she received her B.S. degree in education and in 1950 her Master’s degree with a specialization in reading. Having taught at many schools in Monroe County, she finished her career at Union Elementary with 23 years of instruction there. In all, she gave 45 years of devoted of service to her home county and to her students.

Ms. Shrader joined Delta Kappa Gamma in 1972. Nancy Bostic, on behalf of the chapter, presented to her a 50-year pin and certificate and a bouquet of roses, the symbol of Delta Kappa Gamma. Her journey in becoming a successful teacher is truly inspiring.

In President Lucy Bell’s absence due to illness, Vice-President Lynn Bostic conducted the business. An important part of the meeting was the recognition of Madison Miller, the recipient of the Nancy Ratliff Memorial Scholarship, a one-time scholarship given by Alpha Gamma in honor of Ms. Ratliff, who was also a 50-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Madison had been invited to the meeting to be introduced to everyone. However, she was being quarantined because of exposure to Covid. Madison, a Monroe Countian, plans to become an elementary teacher with a specialization in special education.

Many business items had to be postponed because of the lack of a quorum. The memorial service for Glee Nutter will be conducted at the May meeting, along with the election of officers for 2022-24 term, and the nominations for new members will be read. That meeting is scheduled for May 21, at which time dues for next year may be paid.
