Orvetta Mae (Puckett) Fitzwater

Orvetta Mae (Puckett) Fitzwater, 92, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025, at Meadowsbrook Acres Nursing Center, Charleston, WV, following a long illness. She was born on June 27, 1933, at Craig, WV.

Mrs. Fitzwater was a retired educator, having taught English, Language Arts, and Physical Education in the Greenbrier County school system for over 30 years. After retirement, she continued as a substitute teacher for many years.

Mrs. Fitzwater graduated as Valedictorian of Rainelle High School in 1951. She was a member of the National Honor Society and the editor of her school newspaper. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Concord College in 1955 and a Master’s degree from the University of Tennessee in 1957. She was a member of the Delta Sigma Epsilon sorority, the Future Teachers of America, and the Women’s Athletic Association.

Mrs. Fitzwater was beloved by many. She will be remembered for her quiet strength and enduring dedication to her family, faith, and community. She was an active member of the Shuck Memorial Baptist Church in Lewisburg, WV. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, playing hymns on the piano, and volunteering.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Orpha and Phala Puckett; her husband, Roy Milton Fitzwater; and a sister, Elizabeth (Puckett) Zopp.

She is survived by her son, Kim Fitzwater (Penny) of Leland, NC; two grandsons, Brad Fitzwater (Chelsie) of Wake Forest, NC, and Benjamin Fitzwater (Jessica) of Concord, NC; three great-grandchildren, Audrey, Caroline, and Theodore Fitzwater; two sisters, Uala (Puckett) Wells and Vonnie (Puckett) Coleman of Charleston, WV; and loving nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, by Dr. Jonathan Turner at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, WV, and burial services will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum, Clintonville, WV.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg WV, prior to the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your favorite charity in remembrance of Orvetta Fitzwater.
