Dear Editor:
The recent article “Push for licensing of midwives presented in Charleston” took me back 3-4 decades because all my children’s births and literally dozens of my friends had direct entry midwives assist with the pregnancies and births. Almost all were members of the Midwives Alliance of WV, an organization that I support, respect and value. These midwives practice patient and family centered care at homes and at birth centers, and are very supportive of one another and ongoing education. Being able to have health insurance cover some of the costs would be one benefit of this legislation. Expanding accessibility would be another.
I join with midwife Danette Condon to encourage people to contact their legislators in support of House Concurrent Resolution #139 at www.legis.state.wv.us and visiting North American Registry of Midwives www.narm.org for more information.
