The Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT), 1038 Washington Street East, announces two special events that will be happening in January at the theatre.
A performance of Always Keep Your Lion on a Leash: A Unique Piece of West Virginia History will be at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 23. Run time is approximately 30 minutes with a short time for feedback afterwards. The performance is free and open to all ages. The show will be touring elementary schools throughout the state as part of the GVT Educational Touring Initiative Spring 2025 Tour.
This play with music was created to share the unique true story of French, the Alderson Lion, who lived in Alderson, WV, in the 1890s before traveling with the Barnum and Bailey Circus. His entertaining story encourages audiences to embrace what makes them different and roar through life’s challenges to greatness.
On Jan. 25, GVT will present a performance transmitted live from the Met stage in New York City. Met Live in HD: Aida will be presented at 2:30 p.m. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and a talk will be provided at 11:45 a.m.
American soprano Angel Blue headlines as the Ethiopian princess torn between love and country in a new production of Verdi’s Aida by Michael Mayer that brings audiences inside the towering pyramids and gilded tombs of ancient Egypt with intricate projections and dazzling animations. Romanian-Hungarian mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi also stars as Aida’s rival, Amneris, alongside Polish tenor Piotr Beczala as the soldier Radames – completing opera’s greatest love triangle.
The Met: Live in HD, the Metropolitan Opera’s award- winning series of live high-definition cinema simulcasts is in its 18th season.
“From its beginnings, The Met: Live in HD was created to connect the Met to a global audience,” says Peter Gelb, the Met’s Maria Manetti Shrem General Manager. “We’re glad to see audiences around the world beginning to return to cinemas in larger numbers since the end of the pandemic.”
