Surrounded by loved ones and the caring and compassionate staff of Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg, WV, Paul D Raines, 71, passed away peacefully on Jan. 9, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on Jan. 29, 1953, in Charleston, WV, Paul graduated from South Charleston High School in 1970, and attended Marshall University. A natural-born salesman, he had a gift for business, having owned and successfully operated the local Western Auto for 48 years.

Paul had a heart for service and giving back to the community that supported him. He loved children and made it his mission to make the Christmas season brighter for so many families that were struggling. Paul wanted no recognition for helping others, and did so anonymously. His joy was found in his generosity.

Through his dedication to his beloved daughter’s Memorial Scholarship Fund, he enabled many students around the region to fulfill their dreams of a college education. The many success stories began with his tireless work and the generous community in which he lived. He was always so appreciative and amazed at the friends and neighbors that generously supported the youth of our region. He stressed the importance of academics, along with his love of athletics. He was, first & foremost, a GREENBRIER WEST CAVALIER SUPER FAN!! He was so proud of the students, staff, and community, and of the many things they were able to accomplish TOGETHER. He had a vision and talent for turning hopes and dreams into reality.

Paul also liked to PLAY! He had such a big personality; he never lost his love of muscle cars, hunting, sports, and Harley-Davidson motorcycles! He and Vicky enjoyed taking “the buggy” across Simms Mountain Road on Sundays, enjoying the outdoors…

Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 48 years, Vicky (Nelson), sister, Susan Gwinn and husband Gary, also of Rainelle, family, and many friends. Paul was preceded in death by his dearly-loved daughter Lindsey in 2006, and beloved mother Norma Raines in 2000.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests considering a donation to The Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg, or the Greenbrier West football program, c/o Kelly Vaughan at 773 Little Creek Hollow Road, Rainelle, WV 25962. All memorial tributes and contributions are deeply appreciated!

We would like to recognize the wonderful care Paul received from the fire department, ambulance service, emergency department and ICU (Cindy and staff) at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, & Amy, Hope, & Morgan from The Peyton House. They not only took care of Paul, but were so kind and caring to our family…

Services were held at 2 p.m., Jan. 12, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel with Pastor Roger Adams and Pastor Steve Martin officiating. Eulogies by Bob and Kim Johnson, Kelly and Marcie Vaughan and Jeremy and Joanna Willis. Visitation was held from 12 noon until time of service at the funeral home. Due to weather conditions, burial will be at a later date.

As the kind tributes continue coming in, the family would like to thank each and every one of you. Not only did he touch many lives, but YOU occupied a special place in HIS heart. So, to honor his legacy, please keep doing what you’ve been doing: “paying it forward!” May GOD bless you!!
