Available to West Virginia schools, K-12

The Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT), 1038 Washington Street East, is committed to providing on-going, inclusive, quality education in theatre and the performing arts for K-12 students through-out West Virginia. GVT educational programs engage students in activities and exercises that challenge their abilities and promote intellectual, creative, and personal growth.

For Spring of 2025, Greenbrier Valley Theatre is offering one production and seven work-shops. The production is Always Keep Your Lion on a Leash: A Unique Piece of West Virginia History. This play with music was created to share the unique true story of French, the Alderson Lion, who lived in Alderson, West Virginia in the 1890s before traveling with the Barnum & Bailey Circus. His entertaining story encourages audiences to embrace what makes them different and roar through life’s challenges to greatness. The two person cast, simple set and costumes allows for this show to be performed in a library, gymnasium, auditorium, or cafeteria space.

In addition, seven workshops are offered for teachers to choose from that infuse the instruction of curriculum standards with dramatic arts. Each workshop is 45 minutes long and designed to be presented in classrooms. Topics include: English, Math, Science, and Social Emotional Learning.

Two professional teaching artists will travel from the Greenbrier Valley Theatre to the school with all of the materials they will need to present the workshops and production. These opportunities come at no cost to your school due to the support of the US Department of Education.

Spring dates are Jan. 27 through Apr. 25, 2025. Interested schools should seek more information and book dates by contacting Dorothy Jo Oberfoell, Education Director at educa-tion@gvtheatre.orgor by calling 304-645-3838, extension 111.
