New River Community and Technical College is thrilled to announce the expansion of their Hospitality and Tourism program with the introduction of two new degrees: Food Service/Event Management and Outdoor Recreation Management. These programs are designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in West Virginia’s growing tourism industry. Each program offers three distinct academic paths: the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.), Certificate of Applied Science (C.A.S.), and Advanced Skill Set Certificate (A.S.S.C.).
The Food Service/Event Management degree program uniquely combines Culinary Arts with Business Management, preparing students for leadership roles in the dynamic food service and event planning sectors. The Associate in Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) is tailored for those looking to work in managerial or entrepreneurial positions in resorts, restaurants, hotels, inns, or bed and breakfast establishments. Classes are set to begin this fall during Rolling Start on Sept. 23.
The Outdoor Recreation Management program is designed to prepare students for exciting careers in the outdoor tourism and hospitality sector. With a focus on field-based learning and leadership development, this program equips students with the skills and certifications needed to succeed in the growing field of outdoor recreation. Classes are set to begin during Spring Rolling Start on Mar. 3, 2025.
New River Community and Technical College has been awarded $500,000 by the West Virginia Department of Tourism to develop these technical programs, underscoring the importance of tourism to the state’s economy.
Both degrees offer certificate options and are eligible for dual enrollment with Career and Technical Centers, providing flexibility and accessibility to a wider range of students.
