Free music! The Greenbrier Valley Visitors Center welcomes you to stop by for an evening of art and music. May’s Art in the Valley series features the EMPOWER Project through Communities in Schools of Greenbrier County. The EMPOWER Project is designed to encourage youth to find positive coping mechanisms and self-expression through art. The artwork, created by students in grade 5-12, will be auctioned by Communities in Schools of Greenbrier County on Wednesday, May 17, in the Visitors Center. Stop by to view this amazing student art and learn more about the upcoming auction. Local quilter, Anne Hatchett, will display and sell her handmade quilts during the month of May. Anne, who has been quilting for 35 years, is an active member of the Alderson Quilt Guild and is a quilting instructor. Beginning at 6 p.m., music for the evening will be provided by Distant Light, “a small community of friends” who love to play music together. They will feature original compositions covering several genres such as folk, rock, country, and jazz. Representatives from the Alderson Quilt Guild, Hospitality House, and Greenbrier Historical Society will be on hand with information and raffles. Happy Cinco de Mayo! Carnegie Hall will be hosting Watercolorist John Coffey and his exhibit in the Museum Gallery, Carnegie Hall, 5 p.m. Exhibit runs through June 30. Also at Carnegie, “Come play with clay!” Bring a date or a friend, or show up on your own for this fun evening of collaborative creativity! “Monster Mugs and Bowls” with Instructor Amie Durrman, from 6 to 8 p.m. Maximum class size is 10, for ages 16+. The cost for the clay class is $55 for members and $65 for nonmembers. This workshop is just for having a monster night of fun with your friends! Let your imagination run wild with this easy to follow guided project. Instructor will demonstrate basic hand building techniques including surface attachment and design for students to explore. Each student will select one of our studio glazes for their creation, which will be fired by Carnegie Hall and available for pick up later.
