Author Belinda Anderson is offering a new workshop, “Holiday Memories Writing,” through New River Community and Technical College starting Dec. 3.
“This is a time of year that brings so many memories to the surface,” Anderson said. “And it’s a perfect time to write about those memories.”
The three-week Holiday Memories Writing Workshop will meet on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. for one hour. Students can attend the audio-only class either by phone, including land lines, or through an internet conference call connection. (High-speed internet is not required.) Class meetings will include lecture, time for questions and participant sharing, and group e-mail follow-up as needed.
“The convenience of an audio conference call class means students can attend and still keep an eye on the oven if holiday baking is underway,” Anderson added.
While Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are timely topics, students can respond to prompts as they choose and write about other holidays, too.
The workshop is scheduled so that students will conclude the course with writing that can be given as gifts and tips for using holiday gatherings as a way of collecting more memories.
Several of Anderson’s short story collections, published by Mountain State Press, feature holiday memories. Her remembrance from childhood about the family tradition of a cedar Christmas tree is included in the anthology, “True Christmas Stories from the Heart of Appalachia,” published by the Jesse Stuart Foundation.
Tuition for the class is $75, and registration is required by Nov. 17. Participants will be emailed the conference call number and access code after registering and paying for the class.
