White Sulphur Springs-Steward F. “Tony” Godfrey, born on Jan. 29, 1961, in Clifton Forge, VA, the son of the Late Frank and Odessa Godfrey and stepmother, Annie Godfrey.

He transitioned from this life on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roy and Norman Robinson; sister, Barbara Kemp; and nephew, Hershall Godfrey.

Tony attended public schools in Botetourt, VA; later moved to Martinsville, VA, prior to making his permanent residence in White Sulphur Springs.

He was baptized at an early age in Eagle Rock, VA, under the leadership of the late Elder John Henry Jackson and later became a member of the New Vision Baptist Church in White Sulphur Springs.

Tony was involved in a serious car accident in 2008, which left him disabled and he lived the rest of his life with his sister, Odessa. He was delicately cared for by his sisters, Odessa and Gillie. Prior to his disability he was an employee of Jim Walter Homes, DD Kerns Construction Company, and an Independent Contractor. He loved hunting, fishing, riding horses, playing corn hole and was an avid horseshoe player. Tony’s favorite hobby was reading. He loved children of all ages and his favorite football teams were the Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Those left to cherish Tony’s spirit: sisters, Odessa and Gillie Godfrey; brothers, Frank and Timothy Godfrey; four nephews, Dominique, Isaiah, Rahzell and London Godfrey; two nieces, Chasity Crawford and Jasmine Sowell; two great-nieces, Anayiah and Winter; three aunts, Lucille (David) Beverly, Shirley Flower and Katherine Cook; and Uncle Lloyd (Kathleen) Robinson; Tony’s Special Friend Eugene Gooch and two special cousins/nieces, Kizzie (Deborah) Damon and his partners in “crime”, Akiva (Keylo) Martin. He also leaves a host of other family members, friends and acquaintances.

We always knew, no matter what or how far we were, if we needed Tony, he’d be there! You would have to deal with “Long Bill” if you messed with his family and after he made his point he would say, “Let’s go get a drink.” Upon meeting him, you would know that he was a kind, generous and loving person.

We will truly miss our brother, uncle, cousin and friend, but we the family believe and relied upon the scripture found in Philippians 4:13. “I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me.”

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19, at New Vision Baptist Church, 268 Church Street, White Sulphur Springs, at noon with Pastors Katie Holland and Greg Scott officiating. Viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to noon.

Masks are required in the sanctuary.

Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg is in charge of arrangements.
